In 2014 I will commemorate 10 summers of fishing in Chignik, and it remains my all-time favorite angling destination, despite fishing throughout Alaska, Patagonia, Baja, and Belize.
I grew up in Alaska, fly rod in hand and not until I visited Chignik did I truly know the meaning of ‘wild’ and ‘pristine’. Chignik stands apart from other destinations as the diversity of fishing opportunity here is unparalleled; from fly-fishing for Dolly Varden, sockeye salmon, coho salmon, and Chinook salmon in freshwater, to catching halibut and coho on flies in saltwater, to traditional methods of catching salmon and halibut on conventional tackle.
Beyond the fishing, John and Mary Ann are superb hosts, running the lodge in a family-style tradition that is extremely comfortable, without a hint of pretentiousness. The food is wonderful and abundant. Simply put, I can’t wait for my next trip to Chignik!
